The University of Ghana (UG) Sports and Wellness Directorate has officially launched a Cycling Club, becoming the first university in the country to establish a Cycling Club.

The club was unveiled by Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of the University’s Sports and Wellness Directorate and Jane Mingle, Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana on Saturday, 22nd August during the 2026 PRUFunRide held on the University of Ghana Campus.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Austin Luguterah described the milestone as a source of pride, noting that the UG Cycling Club is the first of its kind in Ghana. He pointed out just how uncommon dedicated cycling clubs still are on the continent, revealing that Africa currently has only six (6) such clubs in total, four (4) based in South Africa and two (2) in Nigeria.

With the launch of the UG Cycling Club, Ghana now joins that short list, positioning the university as a pioneer in organised competitive cycling within the country.

According to Dr. Austin Luguterah, the club's core objective is to identify and train outstanding cyclists from within the university community and prepare them to compete on the international stage. The club, working closely with the Ghana Cycling Federation, is designed to give members structured coaching and consistent opportunities to develop their skills, with an eye on representing Ghana at higher levels of competition in the future.

Beyond its competitive ambitions, the club also promotes cycling as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. Importantly, membership is not restricted to student-athletes alone; the UG Cycling Club is open to the entire university community, including lecturers, staff and students who want to cycle recreationally.

This inclusive approach reflects a broader push by the university's Sports and Wellness Directorate to encourage physical activity and community engagement across all levels of campus life.
