The University of Ghana (UG) is set to participate in the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games, scheduled to take place in Cairo, Egypt, from 8th to 16th September, 2026.

The University will be represented by a delegation comprising 23 student-athletes and eight coaches and officials, who will join their counterparts from universities across the African continent for one of Africa’s largest university sporting events.

The Games, organised under the auspices of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU), in collaboration with Egyptian authorities and university sports bodies, will provide a platform for student-athletes to compete at the continental level while promoting friendship, cultural exchange and cooperation among African universities.

An estimated 2,000 athletes and officials from 81 universities across 17 African countries are expected to participate in the Games. The competition programme features 18 main sporting disciplines.

For the University of Ghana, participation in the Games forms part of its continuing commitment to the development of university sport and the provision of opportunities for talented student-athletes to compete at national, continental and international levels.

The Games will also provide UG’s student-athletes with an opportunity to test their abilities against some of the best university athletes on the continent, gain valuable international competition experience, and represent both the University and Ghana on a major continental stage.

Speaking ahead of the delegation’s departure for Cairo, the Director of Sports and Wellness, Dr. Austin Wontepaga Luguterah, expressed confidence in the team and emphasised the University’s ambition to improve upon its performance at the previous edition of the Games.

“We are going to Cairo with a clear ambition to compete at the highest level and improve on our performance at the 2024 FASU Games. Our student-athletes have prepared diligently, and we believe they have what it takes to challenge for medals across the various disciplines. Our goal is not simply to participate, but to make a strong impact, increase our medal haul and further establish the University of Ghana as a leading force in African university sport. We expect our athletes to compete with confidence, discipline and determination, while representing the University and Ghana with distinction.”

Dr. Luguterah further noted that, beyond competition, the FASU Games provide an important platform for fostering unity, friendship, fair play and cultural exchange among university students from across Africa. This year’s Games will also feature cultural, academic and social activities aimed at strengthening cooperation and interaction among Africa’s university communities.

The Cairo Games will feature competitions in athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, fencing, football, futsal, judo, karate, modern pentathlon, padel, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. The University of Ghana will compete in athletics, badminton and tennis.

The UG delegation will approach the competition with determination and a strong desire to uphold the University’s proud sporting tradition. The student-athletes will seek to distinguish themselves in their respective disciplines and compete for honours for both the University and Ghana.

Participation in Cairo 2026 also provides an important avenue for the University to deepen its relationships with other African universities through sport. Such engagements complement UG’s broader efforts to use sport as a vehicle for student development, institutional partnerships, internationalisation and enhanced global visibility.

As the delegation heads to Cairo, expectations are high that UG’s student-athletes will compete with discipline, resilience, sportsmanship and excellence, while serving as worthy ambassadors of the University and Ghana.

The 12th FASU Games – Cairo 2026 officially begins on 8th September 2026 and concludes on 16th September 2026.
