World Cup Visa Scandal: Sack Kofi Adams and GTA CEO Now! - Minority to Prez Mahama
The Minority in Parliament has insisted that the controversy surrounding the World Cup visa facilitation arrangements must not end with the dismissal of only one official.
The Minority says further action is required following President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to remove the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) from office.
Addressing the press at Parliament House, the Ranking Member on the Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said although the Minority acknowledges the President’s decision, it believes several questions arising from the documentary trail remain unanswered.
“This cannot end with one dismissal,” Hon. Assafuah stated.
“The President has removed [the NSA DG]. We acknowledge that decision, but the public should not be made to believe that the removal of one official automatically answers every question arising from the document,” he added.
According to him, the Minority is seeking accountability across all institutions and individuals whose roles may have been connected to the visa facilitation arrangements.
He therefore called for the immediate dismissal of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams as well as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
“We therefore call for the immediate dismissal of Honourable Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, and the immediate dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority,” Hon. Assafuah declared.
He explained that the call was based on concerns over the continued involvement of the two institutions in the matter and the need to preserve public confidence in any investigation.
“Their continued stay in office in the face of the questions surrounding the roles of their respective institutions cannot be allowed to undermine public confidence in the investigation,” he stressed.
Hon. Assafuah added that the Minority believes the matter requires a broader investigation rather than focusing solely on the official who has already been removed.
“This cannot end with one dismissal,” he reiterated, stressing that the documentary trail raises questions that must be fully examined.
The Minority is consequently demanding what it describes as a full, independent and transparent investigation into the entire visa facilitation arrangement.
The investigation, according to Hon. Assafuah, should cover the roles played by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the Ghana Tourism Authority, the National Sports Authority, Tribe Culture Fest and all individuals linked to the collection of monies and the preparation of lists.
The Minority says such an investigation is necessary to establish what transpired, determine responsibility where wrongdoing is established and provide answers to the questions surrounding the visa arrangements.
Hon. Assafuah maintained that the removal of the NSA Director-General should not be treated as the conclusion of the matter.
“The public should not be made to believe that the removal of one official automatically answers every question arising from the document,” he said.
He further argued that accountability should extend to all relevant institutions and officials whose actions or decisions contributed to the controversy.
The Minority’s demand for the removal of the Sports Minister and GTA CEO as well as its call for an independent investigation now places further pressure on the government to provide clarity on the visa facilitation arrangements and the roles played by the various actors involved.
