The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has expressed approval of the government's decision to implement a 10% salary increase for public sector workers, acknowledging the prevailing economic difficulties.

Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the GFL, noted that, given the previous administration's economic mismanagement, he had anticipated no salary increment at all; thus, the 10% rise is a positive development.

The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) announced the 10% increase in Ghana's National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) for 2025, raising the rate to GH₵19.97, effective March 1, 2025.

This decision aims to balance fair worker compensation with economic stability and business sustainability.

Mr Koomson highlighted that both the Finance Minister and the Minister of Employment would have preferred a higher salary increment but were constrained by the current economic realities.

He criticized the previous government for reckless spending, arguing that their financial mismanagement is now affecting the entire nation. "Labour unions observed how the past government squandered public funds, yet many remained silent.

Now, we are all facing the consequences," Koomson stated.

Koomson also supported President Mahama's assertion that the country's financial state resembles a "crime scene," attributing the crisis to excessive and wasteful expenditures by the former administration.

He emphasized the importance of prudent financial management to prevent such economic downturns in the future.

The GFL's stance reflects a broader sentiment among labour organizations that, despite the modesty of the increment, it is a step in the right direction given the challenging economic landscape.

The federation continues to advocate for responsible governance and fiscal policies that prioritize the welfare of workers and the sustainable development of the nation.

He spoke in an interview on Ahotor FM's "Yepe Ahunu" show.
