Fameye slams graphic designers over alleged AI-generated artwork
Award-winning Ghanaian singer-songwriter Fameye has publicly expressed frustration over what he describes as the growing practice of graphic designers submitting alleged AI-generated cover artworks for his music and still expecting full payment.
In a strongly worded complaint, the artiste suggested that some creatives were relying on artificial intelligence (AI) tools rather than original design skills, a move he considers unprofessional and unacceptable.
“If AI is all that it takes, I can do the artworks myself. Don’t mail me any lazy work. Lazy people should not be paid,” Fameye stated on Facebook, in Pidgin.
His comments raise concerns over the ethical use of AI in creative work. While AI tools are increasingly being adopted to speed up design processes and generate ideas, critics argue that presenting AI-generated outputs as fully original work, without disclosure or added creative input, undermines professionalism and fair compensation.
Fameye’s remarks reflect a broader concern among artistes who rely heavily on visual branding to market their music. Album and single cover art are considered a crucial part of an artiste’s identity and promotional strategy, and many musicians expect bespoke, carefully crafted designs that align with their vision.
As AI continues to reshape creative industries worldwide, Fameye’s outburst highlights the need for clearer standards, transparency, and conversations around originality, effort, and value in creative collaborations.
