Kwabena Kwabena: I'm not an NPP member, I only believed in Akufo-Addo's vision in 2008
Kwabena Kwabena has clarified he is not a New Patriotic Party (NPP) member or fanatic.
Speaking to Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo, the Highlife star explained his public support for the party in 2008 – through the release of a campaign song – was specifically because he “bought into candidate Akufo-Addo’s idea and willingly supported his campaign”.
He emphasised, “I’m not a card-bearing member of the NPP but I loved his ideologies and his plans for Ghana.”
Kwabena Kwabena registered he was “proud” to campaign for Mr Akufo-Addo, who would only become president in 2017.
The Tuamudaa hitmaker said, however, he went quiet on his support for the NPP because, among other things, “over the years, they’ve not treated me well.
“It’s not something I want to go into details for. But the bottom line is they know very well they mistreated me.”
He stressed every leadership member who speaks to him opens with an apology and the words, “We know we did not treat you fairly.”
The multiple award-winning singer-songwriter opened up about his old song being used during the 2024 elections, noting he found it inappropriate.
“I did a song in 2008. Fast forward to 2024, you [NPP] picked the number one spot on the ballot and thought you needed to revisit that song and use it. You called, and initiated a conversation for mutual understanding towards an advertisement,” he said.
According to Kwabena Kwabena, even though an agreement was not reached, the NPP went ahead to “edit out what they wanted from the old song and then put my voice and image out there without my consent, approval and substantive agreement”.
He said he trusted his management to handle the infringement appropriately.
Kwabena Kwabena's 2008 NPP campaign song was titled Vote Number 1.
