Urban gospel music is not spoiling the youth – Kobby Salm
Urban gospel musician Kobby Salm has rejected claims that urban gospel music is corrupting children or turning churches into nightclubs, describing such views as misconceptions about the genre.
Speaking on Accra -based No.1 Gospel Showbiz, hosted by Taller Dee, Kobby Salm said he does not dwell on what people think about urban gospel music but believes it is important to highlight the positive role the genre plays in winning souls.
According to him, many people believe gospel music must be limited to worship and praise.
However, he clarified that he did not hold that belief himself but only came to better understand how God could use different music styles to reach people.
“When God called me to do gospel music, I asked how I would do it.
I later realised that I could still be a rapper and serve in the church.
That is what urban gospel is doing,” he explained.
Kobby Salm noted that urban gospel music gives young people the freedom to relate to God in a way they understand, adding that this liberty has encouraged many to come to Christ.
He stressed that urban gospel musicians do not just carry music but also promote a lifestyle rooted in Christian values.
He warned parents who prevent their children from engaging with urban gospel music to be mindful, as such actions could expose them to worse influences.
“If you stop your child from getting involved in urban gospel music and do not take care, you may lose that child to something worse,” he cautioned.
The musician further stated that while Christianity is changing in how it reaches the younger generation, God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
He added that understanding how Gen Z relates to God is crucial to guiding their behaviour and faith.
