MDF calls for urgent action after fatal mining pit collapse at Mpasatia

The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) has expressed deep concern over the tragic collapse of a mining pit at an illegal mining site in Mpasatia, Ashanti Region, which resulted in the loss of five lives.
In a statement signed by the Acting Administrator of the MDF, Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, the fund extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the incident.
The MDF described the disaster as “a painful reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining (galamsey),” which continues to pose significant threats to human lives, communities, and the environment.
The MDF assured the public of its commitment to eliminating illegal mining by working closely with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, security agencies, and local authorities to dismantle unlawful mining operations and enforce safety regulations.
As part of efforts to curb the galamsey menace, the MDF announced plans to expand alternative livelihood programs in collaboration with local leaders, civil society organizations, and NGOs.
These initiatives will provide affected individuals with opportunities in vocational training, sustainable agriculture, poultry farming, and entrepreneurship to reduce dependence on illegal mining.
The MDF further emphasized its role in developing mining communities by ensuring that Ghana’s mineral resources are managed sustainably and responsibly.
The fund urged all individuals engaged in illegal mining to desist from such activities and instead take advantage of government-sanctioned programs that offer safer and more sustainable livelihood opportunities.
While mourning the lives lost, the MDF called for collective action to prevent similar tragedies in the future, stressing that the fight against illegal mining requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.
