Illegal migrants in US

A report by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has revealed that 3,228 Ghanaians are among over 1.4 million immigrants listed for deportation from the United States of America.

The latest statistics from November 2024 indicate that 1,445,549 individuals face removal, including a significant number from various African countries. Among them are:

3,690 Nigerians 1,282 Kenyans 393 Ugandans 1,035 Gambians 1,897 Guineans 427 Togolese 60 Gabonese

According to ICE, the affected individuals, referred to as “aliens”, are being deported for multiple reasons, including being undocumented, failing to claim a credible fear of return, or receiving a negative credible fear determination affirmed by an immigration judge.

While ICE did not disclose specific reasons for delays in deporting some individuals with final removal orders, the agency cited logistical challenges, legal barriers, and diplomatic hurdles as key obstacles.

This development aligns with  President Donald Trump’s broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants, a policy that has sparked criticism and concerns over its impact on African immigrant communities in the U.S.

Under Title 8 of the U.S. Code, ICE is authorized to deport noncitizens with final removal orders. However, enforcement is often complicated by the individual circumstances of each case.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has yet to issue an official response regarding the deportation list. However, the news has triggered widespread discussions about its implications for Ghanaian deportees and their families back home.
