Yaw Owusu Bimpeh threatens legal action over Ashanti Regional Council of State election re-run

A candidate in the Ashanti Regional Council of State elections, Mr. Yaw Owusu Bimpeh, has threatened to take legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) following its decision to re-run the election instead of declaring him the winner.
Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Mr. Bimpeh, a former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), insisted that he had already won the contest, citing the large number of ballots sorted in his favour before the process was disrupted by unidentified thugs.
According to him, he had been expecting an official declaration from the EC confirming his victory but was instead informed that the election would be re-run.
The disruption occurred during the sorting of ballots when a group of well-built men stormed the Regional Coordinating Council, the polling venue, and vandalized electoral materials.
Following the incident, the Ghana Police Service launched an investigation to apprehend those responsible.
On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the EC announced that a re-run of the election would be held on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Mr. Bimpeh, who sustained a neck injury after being hit with a chair during the fracas and is currently bandaged, has vowed not to accept anything less than being declared the winner.
"I will not allow this injustice to stand. If the EC does not reverse its decision, I will take legal action to ensure my rightful victory is upheld," he warned.
