Godfred Dame challenges Chief Justice’s removal process at Supreme Court

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has filed a writ at the Supreme Court seeking to halt the ongoing process to remove the Chief Justice from office.
The legal action was taken by Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, with the former A-G as his lawyer, challenging the legitimacy of the process initiated by President John Dramani Mahama.
President Mahama this week presented three petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice Getrude Torkonoo to the Council of State for consultations
Announcing the move in a Facebook post, Assafuah stated: “This morning, I instructed my lawyers to file a writ at the Supreme Court praying the court to declare the consultation processes triggered by the President as null and void and of no effect.”
The writ argues that the procedure followed in attempting to remove the Chief Justice violates constitutional provisions, raising concerns about Executive interference in the Judiciary.
The case is expected to test the limits of presidential authority in judicial matters, as legal and political stakeholders closely monitor developments.
