'I'm now nobody in the NPP'- Kufour cries over exclusion

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed deep disappointment over what he perceives as neglect and exclusion by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the very party he once led to two historic electoral victories.
In a candid conversation with Abetifi MP and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Bryan Acheampong, the former President revealed his growing sense of marginalisation within the party's current structure.
“If this party still has elders… I am one,” Kufuor stated pointedly, highlighting his long-standing role and contributions to the party's development.
He lamented the lack of communication and engagement from the party’s current leadership, stating that despite his institutional memory and service, he has been left out of major discussions and decisions.
“Have I deteriorated to the point where, after being fed, I’d claim I haven’t eaten? No—I haven’t reached that stage yet.
My mind and memory are intact,” he said, defending his mental sharpness and ability to contribute meaningfully.
Recounting the NPP’s evolution from its ideological roots in the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) through decades of political struggle, Kufuor spoke proudly of the party’s rise to power in 2000—a pivotal moment in Ghana’s democratic history.
“I’ve been quiet, but make no mistake, I’ve been watching. Closely,” he remarked. “The least the party can do… is keep me informed. Let me hear what’s happening.”
The former President expressed emotional pain over what he described as being sidelined and ignored by the very organisation he helped shape.
“And now… I’m being sidelined? Ignored? I don’t understand it. I really don’t,” he said, visibly perplexed.
President Kufuor, who led Ghana from 2001 to 2009, is widely regarded for strengthening democratic governance and spearheading significant economic reforms during his tenure.
