President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold infrastructure initiative to construct a six-lane expressway connecting Accra to Kumasi by the end of 2029.

Speaking during a Thank You Tour of the Ashanti Region, the President described the project as a transformative intervention aimed at easing traffic congestion, enhancing road safety, and boosting economic activity between Ghana’s two major cities.

“This expressway will not only cut travel time significantly but will also open up new opportunities for trade, tourism, and regional integration,” President Mahama said.

“By 2029, commuters will experience a modern and efficient highway that meets international standards.”

The planned six-lane road is expected to span over 240 kilometres, replacing the current dual carriageway, which has become increasingly overwhelmed by rising traffic volumes.

According to him, preliminary works including feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and stakeholder consultations are already underway.

The expressway project will be rolled out in phases, with major interchanges, rest stops, and service stations included in the design.

Funding for the project is expected to come from a combination of public investment, private sector partnerships, and international financing.

President Mahama emphasised that the road upgrade aligns with his administration’s broader vision of infrastructure-led development and reiterated his commitment to ensuring transparency and value for money throughout the construction process.

The announcement has been welcomed by commuters and transport operators, many of whom have long expressed frustration over the current state of the Accra-Kumasi highway, known for its heavy traffic and frequent accidents.
