Tensions emerge in NPP after Legon amendment conference over alleged busing of supporters for Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent conference, intended as a platform to showcase unity and internal strength, has instead been overshadowed by controversy—this time, not over ideology or policy, but over allegations of political theatrics.

Several presidential aspirants within the party have raised serious concerns over claims that Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, the party's National Organiser, orchestrated the transportation of over 3,000 non-delegates to the venue, allegedly to bolster support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

To many within the party, the move was seen as an attempt to stage-manage enthusiasm rather than reflect genuine grassroots support.

“This wasn’t spontaneous or representative—it was choreographed,” said a campaign insider, adding that such actions risk undermining the democratic essence of the party’s internal processes.

The incident has rekindled broader anxieties about fairness, transparency, and the role of party executives in influencing perceptions during key moments in the party’s electoral calendar.

Some observers warn that the party is at a critical juncture: One path leads to unity grounded in equity, while the other veers toward division fueled by favouritism.

Nana B, a known supporter of Dr. Bawumia, has yet to respond directly to the allegations.

In past public statements, he has highlighted the NPP’s organisational strength and preparedness for the 2028 elections.

However, critics argue that genuine strength must be underpinned by fairness and trust.

As the internal contest intensifies, it is becoming increasingly clear that the stakes go beyond who emerges as the party’s flagbearer.

They touch on a deeper, defining question for the NPP—will its leadership be earned through open competition and merit, or shaped by optics and backstage manoeuvring
