China grants additional ¥200 million to Ghana for Aflao market and National Theatre projects

The new grant brings China’s total support to 400 million RMB, with the funds earmarked for the construction of the proposed Aflao Market and the renovation of the National Theatre in Accra.
President Mahama described the Aflao Market project as a vital step in strengthening cross-border trade between Ghana and Togo, emphasising its strategic importance to his government’s #ResettingGhana Agenda.
“The Aflao Market will be an important trading platform linking Ghana and Togo, and key to our Resetting Ghana Agenda,” President Mahama stated.
During the discussions, both leaders also explored ways to finalise the Zero Tariff Policy between Ghana and China by the end of October, aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and improving market access for Ghanaian exports.
The talks further focused on promoting responsible and licensed small-scale mining practices in Ghana, while creating new avenues for business cooperation and investment between the two nations.
President Mahama revealed that the Chinese government has expressed strong interest in partnering with Ghana on two major policy initiatives — the 24-hour Economy and the Green Transition Policy, both designed to stimulate growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
“China is excited about Ghana’s 24-hour economy initiative and Green Transition policy and is positioning itself to partner with the government and our business sector,” he said.
President Mahama also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the One China Policy, assuring President Xi of Ghana’s readiness to deepen cooperation on China’s Global Governance Reform Agenda, which seeks a fairer, more inclusive international system.
The bilateral talks mark a strengthening of Ghana–China relations, underscoring both nations’ mutual commitment to economic development, sustainability, and strategic cooperation.
