Ghana’s fuel supply stable despite tax concerns – Bulk Oil CEO
The Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), Patrick Kwaku Ofori, has assured that Ghana will not face immediate fuel shortages despite rising concerns over fuel taxes and supply levels.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on March 18, Dr Ofori attributed supply stability to strong private sector participation following industry deregulation.
He clarified that while Ghana reportedly has a seven-week fuel reserve, about 90% of diesel stocks are held by private companies on behalf of the country.
Local production currently meets around 30% of daily domestic consumption, further supporting supply security.
Dr Ofori noted that fuel availability is guaranteed, but pricing is determined by global crude oil markets, including rising shipment premiums for West Africa.
He also explained how national fuel stocks are calculated daily after terminal operations, with data guiding import planning.
All fuel cargoes scheduled for delivery through April have been confirmed, despite challenges like high insurance costs and rising vessel charges.
Concluding, Dr Ofori reassured Ghanaians that fuel supply remains secure in the coming weeks, even amid global price fluctuations.
