Government seeks land in Akyem Abuakwa for major palm processing factory
The government has announced plans to establish one of Ghana's largest palm processing factories in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area of the Eastern Region.
Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the 2026 Ohum Festival in Kyebi, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah said the initiative forms part of efforts to develop the country's growing palm oil industry and unlock employment opportunities for young people through its value chain.
He appealed to the Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, to work with other traditional authorities in the Akyem Abuakwa area to identify and make available suitable land for the project to commence.
The announcement was made during the Ohum Festival, where traditional leaders from across the Akyem Abuakwa State gathered at Eseho, the forecourt of Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, to pay homage to the Okyehene.
Held under the theme, "Rejuvenating our Customs for Sustainability and Nature Connection", the festival also featured the enstoolment of Nana Kwame Atuapong Ododobibiri as the Akyem Abuakwa Amanonehene.
Addressing the gathering, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim reaffirmed the Mahama administration's commitment to ensuring equitable development across all districts. He said the President would account to Ghanaians for his stewardship.
For his part, the Okyehene urged the government to prioritise the teaching profession by improving teachers' conditions of service, describing them as key to training and nurturing future generations.
He also called on the government to secure financial support to enable contractors working on stalled road and other infrastructure projects to return to site and complete the works.
