Insurance brokers advise flood victims to document damage before filing claims
The Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG) has urged policyholders affected by Monday's flooding to prioritise their safety and follow the appropriate procedures when filing insurance claims.
In a public advisory issued after the flood incident, the association expressed its sympathies to individuals and families who may have suffered losses.
IBAG advised affected policyholders to put their personal safety first and avoid attempting to swim through floodwaters to protect their property.
The association also encouraged victims to take photographs or videos of flooded areas, where possible, to support their insurance claims.
It further advised policyholders not to dispose of damaged property until they have notified their insurance broker or insurer and an inspection has been conducted.
According to the advisory, affected persons should prepare an inventory of damaged property after the floodwaters have receded to assist with the claims process.
IBAG also cautioned policyholders against undertaking reconstruction works, except where necessary to prevent further damage, without first notifying their insurer and providing the estimated replacement costs.
The association warned motorists not to drive through flooded roads, noting that insurers may reject claims for vehicle damage if it is established that a driver deliberately drove through floodwaters.
IBAG urged policyholders requiring assistance to contact their insurance broker or the Association's Secretariat for further guidance on the claims process.
