MPS records 22 percent increase in cargo volumes in first quarter of 2026-CEO
Managing Directors of major global shipping lines, including MSC, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, COSCO, and PIL, have held their quarterly engagement with the management of Meridian Port Services Limited at Terminal 3 of the Tema Port in the Greater Accra Region.
The meeting, part of a structured stakeholder dialogue platform, provided updates on MPS’s operational performance, ongoing investments, and long-term growth strategy.
Addressing participants, the Chief Executive Officer of MPS, Mohamed Samara, highlighted the company’s strong performance, revealing a 22 percent increase in cargo volumes in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
He noted that while capacity constraints are currently moderating transhipment volumes, ongoing investments in infrastructure, equipment, and operational systems are strengthening Tema Port’s regional connectivity and expanding access to key markets across West and Central Africa.
A key focus of the meeting was the impact of these investments on maritime connectivity.
MPS indicated that continuous upgrades in terminal capacity and efficiency have enhanced vessel linkages with major ports, including Port of Dakar, Apapa Port, Port of Cotonou, Port of Lomé, Port of Tangier Med, Port of Abidjan, Port of Pointe-Noire, and Port of Luanda.
According to MPS, the expanding network is reinforcing Tema Port’s position on major global shipping routes, while also creating new trade corridors, reducing transit times, and improving cargo movement across the sub-region.
