Fred Amugi calls for revival of radio drama in Ghana
Veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi has called for a revival of radio drama in Ghana, describing it as a powerful cultural medium that once educated, entertained, and united communities across the country.
He made the appeal during an interview with NYA The Brand, Nana Yaa Agyare, on her television programme Sunshine with NYA, which celebrates individuals making significant contributions to society.
The show airs every Sunday at 8:00pm on Accra-based CTV.
Mr Amugi noted that radio drama holds a unique place in Ghana’s broadcast history, particularly in the period before television became widespread.
From the 1950s through the 1980s and 1990s, he said, radio served as the heartbeat of storytelling, with families gathering around their sets to follow serialised dramas that combined entertainment with moral instruction, social commentary, and indigenous wisdom.
According to the seasoned actor, these productions tackled everyday social issues and were performed in both English and local languages, making them accessible to audiences in urban and rural communities alike.
He stressed that radio drama is far from obsolete, describing it as one of the most inclusive and cost-effective storytelling platforms available.
Mr Amugi argued that a renewed investment in radio drama would help preserve Ghanaian languages, folklore, values, and oral traditions while reaching wide audiences.
Using the platform, he urged broadcasters, producers, cultural institutions, and policymakers to re-invest in radio drama, adapting it to contemporary themes while maintaining its strong storytelling foundations.
The discussion on Sunshine with NYA served as both a reminder and a call to action, highlighting the enduring power of Ghanaian stories and the role radio drama can continue to play in telling them if given renewed support.
