A mining pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, trapping 11 illegal miners underground.

The miners were reportedly working in the pit in search of gold when it caved in.

Two miners who were not inside the pit at the time of the collapse rushed to the community to seek help, prompting residents to mobilise a rescue team and alert the Police and other emergency agencies.

Rescuers worked through the night and have so far retrieved the remains of seven of the 11 miners trapped beneath the debris.

Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be from Asaman Tamfoe.

Four others are still feared trapped underground as rescue efforts continue.

Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are at the scene assisting with the search.

The teams are continuing efforts to locate and rescue the remaining four miners.

Further updates on the identities of the deceased and the rescue operation are expected as the search continues.
