Ablakwa holds high-level talks at US State Department, commends improved visa processing

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high-level bilateral talks with senior United States officials during a visit to the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C.

The Minister disclosed in a social media update that he was hosted by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, and Senior Bureau Official for African Affairs, Nick Checker.

According to Mr Ablakwa, discussions focused on strengthening Ghana–U.S. relations across multiple sectors, including trade, security, and social development. The talks also explored fresh opportunities for businesses in both countries, as well as new agreements aimed at deepening cooperation.

Key areas of engagement included the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) programmes, and preparations toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also commended the United States government for introducing new visa processing mechanisms at its embassy in Accra, noting that the changes have significantly reduced waiting times and cleared the backlog of applications.

He described the development as a positive response to Ghana’s appeals and a step forward in facilitating travel for Ghanaian applicants.

Mr Ablakwa further emphasized the importance of the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the United States, stating that both sides acknowledged the need to expand cooperation into new areas of mutual benefit.

The meeting forms part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce bilateral ties and promote economic and strategic collaboration between the two countries.
