Ghana boosts local tomato production in response to Burkina Faso export ban

The Government of Ghana is ramping up efforts to increase local tomato production following an export ban imposed by Burkina Faso on fresh tomatoes.

The ban, which took effect on March 16, 2026, has raised concerns over supply shortages in Ghana, where a significant portion of tomatoes is sourced from the neighboring country. In direct response to this development, authorities are shifting focus toward strengthening domestic production to cushion the impact.

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry said key initiatives, including the “Feed Ghana” and “Feed the Industry” programmes, are being scaled up to support farmers, improve yields, and expand processing capacity within the local tomato value chain.

Officials say the strategy is aimed at reducing Ghana’s dependence on imports, stabilising market prices, and ensuring a steady supply of tomatoes across the country.

Farmers and agribusiness stakeholders are being encouraged to take advantage of government interventions to increase production.

While engagements with Burkinabè authorities are ongoing to resolve the export restrictions, the government maintains that strengthening local agriculture is critical to safeguarding food security and building long-term resilience in the sector.
