Ghana’s Minister for Health has underscored the need for high-quality education in nursing and midwifery training institutions, stressing that the strength of the country’s healthcare system depends on the calibre of professionals they produce.

Speaking at the inauguration of advisory boards for nursing and midwifery training colleges, the Minister said the government is prioritising reforms aimed at improving training standards and aligning health education with national healthcare needs.

He announced plans to introduce specialised nursing programmes to support the work of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, while efforts are underway to transition health training institutions into Bachelor of Science degree-awarding bodies.

The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of trainees, including the regular payment of allowances, to enhance the learning environment and support students throughout their training.

Additionally, principals of nursing and midwifery training colleges have been directed to strictly adhere to approved admission quotas and accreditation standards to maintain quality and regulatory compliance.

The newly inaugurated advisory boards are expected to provide oversight, guidance and strategic direction to ensure effective management of the institutions and the delivery of quality education.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare workforce and improve service delivery across the country.
