Brazil throws weight behind Mahama’s UN push to declare Transatlantic Slave Trade a crime against humanity
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has announced his country’s full support for a United Nations resolution spearheaded by Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, seeking to declare the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
The development was disclosed following high-level engagements on the sidelines of the ongoing CELAC-Africa Summit in Colombia, where Ghanaian officials are rallying international backing for the resolution.
Brazil’s endorsement is seen as particularly significant given that the South American nation has the largest population of people of African descent outside the African continent.
The growing support strengthens Ghana’s push for global recognition of the historical injustices associated with the transatlantic slave trade and bolsters calls for reparatory justice.
The resolution forms part of a broader international campaign aimed at securing acknowledgment, accountability, and redress for the enduring impact of slavery on African nations and the global African diaspora.
Ghana’s delegation expressed optimism ahead of the United Nations vote scheduled for March 25, 2026, noting that the coalition advocating for reparatory justice continues to expand.
Leaders involved in the discussions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the resolution and pursuing justice through multilateral platforms.
The outcome of the vote is expected to mark a significant milestone in ongoing global efforts to address historical injustices and promote equity for affected communities.
