Central Regional NDC Chairman sues Obaatanpa FM and presenter for ¢10m over alleged defamation
The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, has filed a GH¢10 million defamation suit against Kasoa-based Obaatanpa FM and its morning show host, Kofi Kyei Baffour, over allegations he says were made against him during a live radio programme.
Speaking to the media, Prof Asiedu alleged that the presenter accused him of masterminding acts of violence within the NDC, particularly in the Awutu Senya East Constituency and across the Central Region.
He described the allegations as false, malicious and intended to damage his reputation.
Prof Asiedu further alleged that some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) were behind attempts to tarnish his image through the media.
He also denied reports that he assaulted any member of staff at Obaatanpa FM, explaining that he only visited the station to seek clarification over what he described as repeated insults and defamatory comments made about him during live broadcasts.
According to him, the lawsuit seeks GH¢10 million in damages and demands an immediate public apology and retraction from both the management of Obaatanpa FM and the programme host.
Commenting on the ongoing disagreement between the Awutu Senya East NDC Constituency Chairman and the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Prof Asiedu said he had no personal involvement in the matter.
He explained that the dispute predated his tenure as Central Regional Chairman and that he had been working to promote peace and unity within the party.
Prof Asiedu also accused some staff of Obaatanpa FM of allegedly inciting tension and violence in Kasoa and surrounding communities through their broadcasts.
He disclosed that the NDC, together with the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), had petitioned the National Communications Authority (NCA) to investigate the station's programmes over what they described as inflammatory content.
The management of Obaatanpa FM and Kofi Kyei Baffour are yet to publicly respond to the allegations or the lawsuit.
