The Majority Chief Whip and National President of the Ghana Law Society, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has said the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has no business dealing with the ongoing legal vacation trials controversy, pointing to what he described as a procedural error in how the association took up the matter.

Speaking on JoyNews, Mr Dafeamekpor argued that the GBA's intervention was improperly triggered, since it was law firms, not individual lawyers, who raised the original complaints.

"What is the business of the GBA in this matter? The GBA has no business in this matter. GBA is saying that they received petitions from law firms. Law firms are not part of the Ghana Bar Association. GBA is an association of lawyers , a community of reading men, and we deal with legalese. They didn't set the issues like that. They told everybody they got the petition from law firms, not from lawyers," he said.

He drew a distinction between the individual lawyer at the centre of the matter and the firm he belongs to.

"He's a member of Zoe, Akyea & Co, he's not the law firm. He's the one complaining, it's not the law firm that's complaining. So, GBA has no business in dealing with this matter because the law firms are not members of the GBA, which is constituted by lawyers licensed by the GLC. The law firms or chambers are also licensed separately by the GLC," he argued.

Mr Dafeamekpor suggested the GBA should have redirected the petitioners to a more appropriate channel rather than taking up the matter itself.

"So if you got a petition by some law firms, you ought to have written to them that there's a proper forum - forum convenience - for them to direct their petition to," he said.
