The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) calling their for nationwide "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration an act of hypocrisy.

He slammed the party for organizing the demonstration on the first anniversary of the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight public officials and military personnel.

Speaking to Channel One TV on Thursday, August 6, Mr Tanko said the NPP deliberately chose to hold a political protest on a day Ghanaians were expected to remember those who died in the August 6, 2025 tragedy.

"Time and again, I have been saying it. They exposed their hypocrisy to the whole world, not only to Ghana. That is why Ghanaians will continue to reject them," he said.

He noted that commemorating the first anniversary of the death of loved ones is an important part of Ghanaian culture, hence questioned why the NPP would organise a demonstration on the same day.

"Even in our traditional setting, our culture, we always observe a one-year anniversary after the demise of our loved ones... Today being the 6th of August, the day they lost their lives, the State rolls out a programme of activities, then the main opposition will organise a demonstration on that very day."

Mr Tanko was responding to comments by the NPP's National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, who said the party had fixed the date for the protest before the government announced its programme for the anniversary.

Rejecting that explanation, Mr Tanko questioned whether the NPP could genuinely claim ignorance of the significance of the date.

"Is Nana B a Somalian or Afghanistan? Is he not a Ghanaian? Doesn't he know that in our Ghanaian parlance, we do what we call one-year anniversary? Is he telling the whole world that they forgot 6th August was the day we had the tragedy on?

"This is chop bar thinking and trojan horse analysis they are bringing."

He further accused the NPP of shedding what he described as "crocodile tears" following the helicopter crash last year.

Mr Tanko argued that the party's absence from the national memorial activities reinforced his claims.

"Why are they not here to mourn with the bereaved families?" he asked.

The NPP has maintained that it is mourning what it describes as the decline of Ghana's democracy through its "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration which, it says, is intended to highlight alleged intimidation of critics and threats to free expression under the Mahama administration.
