Nine out of 17 rooms at the Tamale family home of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament (MP), Murtala Mohammed, have been destroyed by fire.

The fire broke out on Wednesday, August 5.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at 3:29 PM and had firefighters at the scene by 3:37 PM.

Speaking to Channel One News, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO I Hudu Baba, said two schoolchildren who became trapped in one of the rooms were rescued.

He said firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread to the rest of the house.

"Nine of the 17 rooms were affected, while the remaining sections of the house were saved," he said.

The GNFS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.

The incident occurred a day before the first anniversary of Murtala Mohammed's death.

The former Tamale Central MP was among eight people who died on August 6, 2025, when a military helicopter crashed in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region while on an official mission from Accra to Obuasi.

The crash also claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces crew members.
