If NDC would think deep, they would end their 'vicious cycle' now - Afenyo-Markin warns
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has expressed disgust over what he believes is inhumane treatment and injustice meted out to some members of his political party, the New Patriotic Party, and some citizens, especially those who align with the party.
Joining a mammoth crowd at the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) demonstration dubbed "Democracy Under Attack" held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Minority Leader alluded to the imprisonment of the party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako alias Chairman Wontumi, bemoaning the court decision.
Chairman Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year jail term for facilitating and issuing a mining right to some persons who engaged in illegal minning on his concession.
The New Patriotic Party finds the sentence an injustice and has hinted of an appeal aimed to set Wontumi free.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking during the demonstration, cautioned the Mahama government of what, to him, is a dangerous precedent that may come back to haunt them should the NPP take the reins in the next administration.
"Wontumi is in prison because the judge says that Wontumi's own concession, other people came to do galamsey on it. All along I even thought Wontumi had gone to do galamsey, not knowing it was not the case. That he had his own mining lease and somebody did galamsey on it, so you say go to jail for 20 years. Why?" he lamented.
"Why should you do that?"the Minority Leader cum MP for Efutu queried.
He seized a moment to further sound a word of caution to the ruling National Democratic Congress saying "if the NDC members will be thinking deep, they should realize that some of the injustice that they, themselves, complained about when they were in opposition. They should end that vicious cycle that they complained about".
"As political leaders, look, there are a lot of problems in the country we must solve. We must focus our energies on solving the problems rather than always targeting our political opponents," Afenyo-Markin advised the government.
