New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator Dennis 'Miracles' Aboagye has accused President John Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of persecuting citizens for exercising their constitutional right to free expression, warning that attempts to silence critics could set a dangerous precedent for Ghana's democracy.

Speaking to Evans Mensah on JoyNews' PM Express, Miracles emphasised the main opposition NPP's position that the government is intimidating people who express dissenting views.

He warned that such actions could have lasting consequences regardless of which political party is in power.

"It may be CPP, it may be PNC, be it PNP, but what you are basically telling the country is that tomorrow, when another party is in power, you see, no government will be in power forever," he said.

Miracles stressed that history has shown that every government eventually leaves office, no matter how powerful they may be.

"Even the military, even with guns, even when people were being dragged from their rooms and being shot in the head in this country, there was a change of government," he said.

The NPP's concerns is the basis for its August 6 nationwide 'Democracy Under Attack' demonstration.

Miracles, who is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and whose bank accounts have been frozen as part of the probe, denied suggestions that his comments implied the NPP would seek revenge if it returned to power.

"No, I haven't said that. But I am saying that precedent becomes law," he said.

According to him, governments should be careful not to create precedents that could later be used against them when they are no longer in office.
