The Suhum Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has presented income-generating items and financial support to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods within the municipality.

The initiative, according to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Miss Lydia Ohenewa Sarah, is aimed at empowering PWDs—particularly those in the informal sector—to enhance their standard of living.

Addressing beneficiaries during the presentation ceremony, Miss. Lydia praised the resilience and strength of PWDs, noting that their ability to live and thrive with disability is an inspiration to the entire municipality.

She emphasised that despite the many challenges they face, PWDs continue to demonstrate determination, perseverance, and the capacity to achieve their goals.

“This initiative is about recognising the potential within you and helping turn that potential into reality,” she said.

She reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting PWDs in their pursuit of economic independence, describing it not just as an aspiration but a fundamental right.

Miss. Lydia stressed that empowering PWDs contributes significantly to building a stronger and more inclusive community. “An inclusive society is a thriving society, and an economy that works for everyone is an economy that benefits all,” she added.

She assured beneficiaries that the Assembly will continue to prioritise their welfare as part of its mandate.

She also urged recipients to put the donated items and funds to proper use to improve their livelihoods.

The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, together with the Disability Fund Committee, will monitor beneficiaries in their various communities.

President of Persons with Disabilities in the Suhum Municipality, Mr. Isaac Tetteh—who also entertained the gathering with some of his musical compositions—encouraged society not to look down on persons with disabilities.

He reiterated that disability is not inability and urged beneficiaries to utilise the items responsibly for their own benefit.

Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the President of Ghana and the MCE for the support, noting that the assistance would help them build sustainable sources of income.
