EPA to launch pilot water cleaning exercise on Birim River
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced a pilot water cleaning exercise on the Birim River, scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Adiukrom in the Asiakwa Area.
The exercise will commence at 8 AM.
This initiative is part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to tackle pollution in water bodies, particularly those caused by illegal mining activities.
The pilot exercise aims to demonstrate practical, science-based methods for restoring degraded river systems and promoting sustainable water resource management.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with several national institutions, including the Ghana Water Limited, the Water Resources Commission, the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), the Ghana Standards Authority, SciencePlus, and Eillish Solutions.
Illegal mining has been identified as a major contributor to declining water quality, disrupted aquatic ecosystems, and limited access to safe drinking water.
The EPA emphasised its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s water resources through coordinated interventions and partnerships with stakeholders.
Members of the public and interested stakeholders are invited to attend and observe the exercise.

Protecting the environment is a collective responsibility, the EPA reminded the public.
