Finance Minister signals end of IMF Bailout era for Ghana

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana is determined to move beyond dependence on International Monetary Fund bailouts, stressing that government has no plans to seek another IMF rescue package in the near future.

According to him, Ghana’s relationship with the IMF is now shifting from emergency financial assistance to a partnership centred on policy support and economic reforms.

Speaking in Parliament he noted that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to ensuring that Ghana’s current IMF programme becomes the last, describing it as the country’s seventeenth arrangement with the Fund.

The Finance Minister disclosed that Ghana has successfully concluded the final assessment under the current IMF-backed programme, awaiting only approval from the IMF Executive Board.

He explained that the country will transition from the Extended Credit Facility programme to a Policy Coordination Instrument, an arrangement focused on policy monitoring and reforms without direct financial support.

Dr. Forson said the move demonstrates growing confidence in Ghana’s economy and reflects the country’s progress toward economic recovery and stability.

He added that government will continue implementing strict fiscal measures and economic reforms aimed at sustaining growth, rebuilding investor confidence, and preventing future economic difficulties.
