Fire engulfs central market in Kumasi; leaves traders stranded
A devastating fire swept through a section of the central market near the Aboabo station in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, destroying propeties worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
The blaze, which erupted around 7:00 pm yesterday, reportedly originated from a single shop before engulfing the adjacent stalls with the inferno impacting traders dealing in aluminium wares and other goods.
Prompt intervention by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service prevented the flames from spreading further through the densely populated market.
No casuaties were recorded and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
The Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Peter Tetteh, confirmed that official investigations have been launched to determine the source of the fire outbreak.
In the wake of this disaster, the affected traders have appealed to the government and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for financial assistance to rebuild their stalls.
"I am appealing to the government to come to our aid financially to rebuild the stalls and also to restart our business," a trader stated.
Another affected vendor echoed similar sentiments, saying "we were not able to salvage any of our wares. They've all burnt. We depend on trading activities to survive...If the government can hear us, we call on it to come and support us because we are in a difficult time."
