The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned communities along the White Volta River and other flood-prone areas in the North East Region to prepare for possible flooding following the planned spillage of the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso.

In a public alert issued by its North East Regional Office, NADMO said authorities managing the Bagré Dam had officially informed Ghana that the dam would be spilled from Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

According to the organisation, the spillage is expected to increase the volume of water flowing downstream into Ghana through the White Volta River and its tributaries.

"The spillage is expected to increase the volume of water flowing downstream into Ghana through the White Volta River and its tributaries. Communities located along riverbanks and flood-prone areas may experience rising water levels, which could result in flooding," the statement said.

NADMO has therefore urged residents, farmers, fishermen, herdsmen and others living or working along riverbanks and low-lying areas to relocate to safer places before floodwaters arrive.

It also advised the public not to farm, fish, graze animals or undertake any activities within river channels and floodplains.

Residents have been encouraged to remove valuables, food items, livestock and farm equipment from areas likely to be affected and to avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers, streams and bridges.

The organisation further advised farmers cultivating along riverbanks to harvest their crops early where necessary before the commencement of the spillage.

NADMO urged residents to comply with directives from the organisation, the security services, district assemblies and other relevant authorities.

The statement said district NADMO offices across the North East Region had been directed to intensify public education and community sensitisation, particularly in communities along the White Volta and other vulnerable waterways.

NADMO assured the public that it would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates as necessary.
