The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II,  has called for the strict enforcement of local by-laws, particularly those regulating the sale and development of lands situated along waterways, to help prevent environmental degradation and flooding in communities.

According to the Ga Mantse, weak enforcement of planning regulations and the indiscriminate sale of lands near water bodies continue to contribute to perennial flooding and environmental challenges in parts of the country.

He stressed the need for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District authorities, traditional leaders, and landowners to work together to ensure that lands earmarked as waterways and flood-prone areas are protected from illegal development.

The Ga Mantse further noted that effective enforcement of existing regulations would help safeguard lives, protect property, and support sustainable urban planning.

He also urged traditional authorities and local assemblies to act responsibly in land administration by ensuring that lands along waterways are not allocated or sold for residential and commercial purposes.

The call comes amid growing concerns over flooding and poor drainage systems in several communities, especially during the rainy season, with environmental experts repeatedly warning against construction on waterways and wetlands.

The Ga Mantse emphasized that addressing the challenge requires collective responsibility, stronger regulation, and strict adherence to planning and environmental laws.
