The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Ghana Medical Trust Fund, has confirmed receipt of a total of GHS6.1 million transferred from the Controller and Accountant -General's Department  following directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.

The funds, according to official sources, are made up of voluntary salary contributions by the President, contributions from political appointees, and deductions from officials who defaulted on asset declaration requirements.

At the launch of the initiative last year, President Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to support the fund, which is aimed at improving access to healthcare and providing medical assistance to vulnerable citizens.

He subsequently encouraged all government appointees to contribute one month of their salaries as part of a broader effort to strengthen healthcare financing and expand support for patients in need.

In addition, the President directed that appointees who failed to meet the deadline for asset declaration should forfeit three months of their salaries, with the funds redirected to the Mahama Cares initiative as part of accountability measures within government.

The Controller and Accountant-General's Department has formally confirmed that the deductions have been completed and the GHS6.1 million successfully transferred to the fund in line with presidential directives.

Authorities also indicated that arrangements are ongoing to transfer a final tranche of funds relating to additional asset declaration defaulters.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is designed to support critical healthcare interventions, including financial assistance for patients requiring specialised treatment. Government officials say the latest inflows will strengthen the fund’s capacity to respond to medical needs across the country.
