GRIDCo board holds first-ever staff durbar, honours team behind Akosombo restoration
The Board of Directors of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has held its first-ever direct engagement with staff during a company-wide durbar at the organisation’s head office in Tema.
The event brought together employees from GRIDCo’s various operational areas and created a platform for open interaction between the board, management, and staff.
The durbar also served as an occasion to formally recognise engineers and technicians whose efforts restored full operations at the Akosombo Generating Station following the April 23, 2026 fire incident.
The gathering was attended by the full board, including Board Chairlady Kuukua Maurice Ankrah; Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III; Nana Amoasi VII; Member of Parliament for Krachi Nchumuru, Hon. Solomon Kuyon; Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, Hon. Joseph Kwame Kumah; Engineer Daniel Atchulo; and Alhaji Muhammed Bashiru Nii Narh Alema.
Acting Chief Executive Engineer Frank Otchere and members of the senior management team were also present.
Addressing staff, Board Chairlady Kuukua Maurice Ankrah described the engagement as a significant milestone in GRIDCo’s history and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and stronger institutional relations across the company.
She also commended staff for their professionalism and dedication during the restoration of the Akosombo facility after the fire damaged the switchyard control room and temporarily disconnected the 1,020-megawatt generating station from the national grid.
GRIDCo engineers reportedly worked under challenging conditions to execute technical bypasses, reconfigure protection systems, and restore the generating units in phases.
The township transformer was restored by April 26, while all six generating units were fully operational by May 1.
Full restoration was later confirmed by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission on May 4.
The board praised the collaboration between GRIDCo and Volta River Authority staff during the emergency response.
“It was beautiful to see the collaboration between the VRA staff and the GRIDCo staff.
You could not tell who was VRA and who was GRIDCo,” the Chairlady noted.
In his remarks, Acting Chief Executive Engineer Frank Otchere likened the Board Chairlady to “Deborah” from the Bible, describing her as a strong and inspirational leader during the crisis.
He also paid tribute to staff for their resilience and commitment.
“When adversities happen and we have men and women who are able to rise up to the occasion, it takes away all the negativities and reminds us of the abilities and strengths that we have,” he said.
The board further announced plans to replace the destroyed switchyard control room with a modern state-of-the-art facility as part of broader efforts to strengthen transmission infrastructure and improve national grid security.
