The country gained independence from Britain on March 6, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence from colonial rule.

The historic moment was led by Ghana’s first Prime Minister and later President, Kwame Nkrumah, who declared that Ghana’s freedom would be meaningless unless it was linked to the total liberation of the African continent.
