President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans for the rollout of Ghana’s Free Primary Health Care Programme, a key government initiative aimed at eliminating cost barriers to essential health services and widening access to preventive care.

Addressing civil society organisations during a presidential dialogue on Monday, March 30, 2026, President Mahama indicated that the initiative will bolster the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and enhance healthcare delivery, especially at the grassroots level.

He announced that the programme is scheduled to be officially launched on April 15, 2026, as part of broader efforts to improve access to healthcare nationwide.

The President also underscored the importance of civil society participation, urging organisations to help raise awareness, track implementation, and provide feedback to ensure the initiative delivers meaningful results.

The Free Primary Health Care Programme is a central component of government’s strategy to promote preventive healthcare and guarantee that citizens can obtain basic medical services without financial strain.

“We are strengthening the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, expanding access to healthcare, and implementing apprenticeship programmes for our youth. I am delighted to announce that the government will officially launch the Free Primary Health Care Programme on April 15, 2026,” he stated.

“I count on CSOs to support public education, assist us in monitoring implementation, and offer feedback to ensure this programme achieves real impact,” he said.
