Gold fraud probe: EOCO names Dr Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple person of interest
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has identified Dr Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, owner of SESI-EDEM Company Limited, as a person of interest in an ongoing investigation involving allegations of defrauding by false pretenses and money laundering.
According to EOCO, in November 2025, J.G Resources Ltd, in collaboration with Unigold Trading LLC, petitioned the Office to investigate SESI-EDEM Company Limited over an alleged attempt to defraud the petitioners of 50 kilograms of gold valued at ₵57,759,594.68.
EOCO is investigating the company under Sections 3 and 74 of the Economic and Organised Crime Act, 2010 (Act 804), Section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and Section 1 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).
The Office stated that in November 2025, Dr Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple was formally invited to report to EOCO but failed to do so. Preliminary investigations indicated that the bank account of SESI-EDEM Company Limited contained proceeds of crime, prompting EOCO to freeze the account on 30th January 2026 to prevent dissipation of the funds.
SESI-EDEM Company Limited challenged the freeze through a court review order on 12th February 2026. EOCO noted that the court did not consider Section 38 of Act 804, which allows for preservation of funds reasonably believed to be proceeds of crime while investigations are ongoing.
The Office emphasized that SESI-EDEM Company Limited has not been charged in court, and the matter remains under investigation.
EOCO further stated that Dr Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple is wanted to assist with investigations. “Considering that the Directors of SESI-EDEM Company Limited have refused to honour lawful requests to appear before investigators, the Office would use lawful means to locate, identify and arrest the Directors,” the statement added.
The notice was signed by the Executive Director of EOCO, Raymond Archer, and dated 30th March 2026.
