Ghana was formally invited by both the United States and Nigeria to participate in the 2025 Christmas Day military operation targeting ISIS militants in Sokoto State, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.

Speaking at Chatham House in London, Ablakwa explained that the US-led strikes were conducted at the request of the Nigerian government.

“The Nigerians will confirm to you, they invited the Americans,” he said.

Ablakwa further revealed both Nigeria and the US reached out to Ghana to collaborate in the anti-terrorism efforts, reflecting the country’s policy of supporting regional security while respecting national sovereignty.

He did not expressly confirm if Ghana agreed to join in the effort but emphasised that Ghana evaluates any military cooperation on a case-by-case basis and only participates when there is “express approval” from the government.

This approach ensures that the country can contribute to regional security without compromising its territorial integrity or that of another country.

He firmly stated allowing foreign military bases on Ghana's soil is a “red line” not to be crossed.

The minister cited Ghana’s cautious stance as a safeguard against situations where foreign powers might operate independently within a nation, referencing global examples such as Iran’s strikes on US bases in neighboring countries as a “vivid vindication” of Ghana’s policy.

According to Ablakwa, this careful balance allows Ghana to work with strategic partners like the US, the UK, and Gulf States on security challenges while maintaining control over the country’s own territory and decision-making.

This disclosure highlights how Ghana navigates international cooperation in counter-terrorism: engaging when requested and agreed upon, but always prioritising and respecting its sovereignty and national security, and that of others.
