Afenyo-Markin protests Minority exclusion from Pan-African, ECOWAS Parliaments

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed strong dissatisfaction over what he says is the exclusion of the Minority caucus from Ghana’s delegations to the Pan-African Parliament and the ECOWAS Parliament.

He contends that the long-standing arrangement used to determine representation on these international parliamentary bodies has been ignored, effectively leaving the Minority without a voice.

Addressing participants at the 9th edition of the Crystal Ball Series, Afenyo-Markin urged parliamentary leadership to act swiftly to correct the situation, maintaining that the Minority is entitled to fair inclusion in such delegations.

He also claimed there appears to be a calculated effort within the House to marginalise the caucus, alleging that a number of motions submitted by Minority MPs have been blocked from reaching the debate stage.

He pointed to a motion concerning the termination of employees from public institutions as a clear illustration of the difficulties confronting the caucus.

He explained that certain state bodies revisited employment records dating back to 2017 and 2018, leading to the dismissal of individuals who had been working with state-owned entities — beyond just the civil service — since 2018.

He lamented that attempts to draw public attention to the issue have been obstructed. He further indicated that although the motion has gone through the necessary procedural steps, efforts to have it debated on the floor of Parliament have consistently been hindered.
