The Police have arrested a suspected landguard at Abokobi in the Greater Accra Region and retrieved several firearms and ammunition believed to have been used in criminal activities.

The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Saviour Kojo Ekpe, was apprehended by a surveillance team following intelligence that he had been terrorising residents in Abokobi and its surrounding communities.

According to police sources, the operation was carried out after the NOD Surveillance Unit gathered information suggesting that the suspect allegedly possessed several weapons, which he was renting out to criminals to carry out unlawful activities.

Based on the intelligence, two teams were deployed to the area to monitor the suspect and effect his arrest.

A search conducted in the suspect’s room led to the retrieval of four pump-action guns, 101 rounds of AA/BB live ammunition, a jackknife, a Glock Austria pistol and 17 rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

During interrogation, Ekpe reportedly admitted ownership of the weapons but failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing them. He told investigators that one of the firearms was used for hunting, another for home protection and another for his personal safety.

Police say the circumstances surrounding the discovery support suspicions that the weapons may have been kept for rental to criminals.

In a related development, another suspect, Emmanuel Abbey, believed to be an accomplice of Ekpe, was also arrested for allegedly threatening the life of a complainant.

Both suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while the retrieved weapons and ammunition have been retained as exhibits.
