The Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has expressed the Minority’s support for a transparent and credible process to select a new operator for the Damang Mine.

He described the committee’s working visit to the mine as timely, noting that it provided members with firsthand insight into preparations ahead of the transition, as the current lease held by Gold Fields nears expiration on April 18, 2026.

According to him, the Minority in Parliament is particularly interested in ensuring that the right investor with the requisite capacity is chosen to take over operations at the mine.

“We are sure to support whatever the outcome is,” Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong affirmed.

The visit forms part of broader stakeholder engagement efforts led by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who has already assured workers of zero job losses during the transition.

Speaking during the visit, the Minister reiterated that safeguarding employment remains a top priority under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, stressing that the government is committed to ensuring continuity of operations, safety, and the protection of existing contracts.

The government has initiated a competitive and transparent tender process to identify a technically and financially capable operator to take over the mine, with measures in place to prevent disruptions and maintain stability.

The Damang Mine, a key asset in Ghana’s mining sector with over three decades of operation, is undergoing a carefully managed transition aimed at enhancing local participation while protecting the interests of workers and stakeholders.
