The Ghana Mine Workers Union has welcomed the government’s firm assurance of zero job losses at the Damang Mine, describing the commitment as a significant step toward protecting workers amid the mine’s ongoing transition.

National Chairman of the Union, Peter Baako Wilson, expressed gratitude to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for prioritising the welfare of employees during the transition process.

“We thank the Minister for the assurance of job security. Whatever will manifest in the transition will work and be implemented for the benefit of the staff,” Mr. Wilson stated.

The assurance follows the government’s earlier commitment that no worker at the Damang Mine operated by Gold Fields will lose their job despite the expiration of the current lease on April 18, 2026.

During a working visit to the mine on April 1, the Minister reaffirmed that protecting jobs remains a top priority under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.

He noted that the government has already initiated a transparent and competitive tender process to identify a new operator with the technical and financial capacity to take over operations.

Mr. Buah emphasised that the transition will be carefully managed to ensure continuity of operations, safety of the mine, and the protection of existing employment contracts.

The Union’s endorsement comes as part of broader stakeholder engagement efforts aimed at ensuring a smooth and seamless transition at the historic mine, which has been in operation for over three decades.

The Government has also reiterated its long-term objective of empowering Ghanaians to take greater control of the mining sector while safeguarding the interests of workers and contractors.
