The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says the government is intensifying efforts to ensure pharmaceutical products and other medical supplies are stored and distributed under internationally recognised standards to protect public health.

Addressing Parliament, the Minister said the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has put in place regulatory measures consistent with the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Good Storage and Distribution Practices to guarantee the quality, safety and effectiveness of medicines throughout the supply chain.

He explained that the standards apply to all organisations involved in the storage, handling and distribution of medical products, ensuring that medicines remain fit for use from the point of manufacture to delivery at health facilities.

Mr Akandoh noted that, under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), the FDA has developed a licensing regime for storage facilities and continues to monitor compliance through inspections and other regulatory interventions.

He added that the Authority has also prioritised capacity building for key personnel in the pharmaceutical supply chain, including pharmacists, warehouse operators, logistics officers and supply chain managers, through regular training on internationally accepted storage and distribution practices.

The Health Minister made the remarks while responding to a question on the floor of Parliament from the Member of Parliament for Offinso North, Fred Kyei Asamoah.

He expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms would strengthen Ghana's health logistics system by promoting transparency, improving efficiency and ensuring that quality-assured medicines and medical products are available across all levels of the country's healthcare delivery network.
