IShowSpeed secures Ghanaian passport, relishes dual citizenship
American content creator IShowSpeed, born Darren Watkins Jr., has officially been granted Ghanaian citizenship following the conclusion of his widely publicised African tour.
In a livestream broadcast to more than 50 million YouTube subscribers on February 12, 2026, IShowSpeed confirmed the development.
To verify the reports, he searched his name online during the broadcast and read aloud confirmation that he had obtained Ghanaian citizenship, making him a dual national of the United States and Ghana.
Overwhelmed with excitement, the YouTuber played Ghana’s national anthem during the stream and celebrated the milestone, calling it a major achievement.
Curious about the travel advantages of his new status, he also researched visa-free destinations available to Ghanaian passport holders.
He discovered he could access several countries across Africa, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia either without a visa or through visa-on-arrival arrangements.
Among the destinations mentioned were Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Barbados, Jamaica, Singapore, and the Maldives.
The content creator further revealed that his mother is Ghanaian, describing the acquisition of citizenship as deeply personal and meaningful. The 21-year-old internet star wrapped up his 20-country livestream tour on January 28, 2026, with Ghana serving as one of the final destinations.
During his stay, he was honoured with a Ghanaian name, Barima Kofi Akuffo, symbolising his growing connection to the country.
On January 28, 2026, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that his office had approved a Ghanaian passport for the streamer.
The minister said the decision recognised IShowSpeed’s “irreversible ties” to Ghana and praised his efforts in showcasing the country to a global audience.
