Motorists using the Kaneshie-Mallam Highway will face traffic diversions from September 7, 2026, as construction begins on major stormwater drains along the route.

The GARID Project Coordinator, Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, said the project will be implemented in two phases, with the first involving the closure of the westbound carriageway of the Dr Busia Highway at Pamprom Junction.

The first phase is expected to run until the end of November 2026, with alternative routes provided for motorists travelling towards First Light Junction and beyond.

The drainage works are scheduled to run from September 2026 to October 2027.

They will involve the construction of a double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain measuring approximately 10 metres wide and 1.95 kilometres long. The new drain will replace the existing pipes.

The project forms part of the government's broader Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) programme, which seeks to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce flooding in Accra.
